KAILASH CAVE AT ELLORA

Ellora is an ancient village 30 km (18.6 miles) from the city of Aurangabad in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Famous for its monumental caves, Ellora is a World Heritage Site. Ellora represents the epitome of Indian rock cut architecture. The 35 "caves" - actually structures excavated out of the vertical face of the Charanandri hills - comprised of Buddhist, Hindu and Jain cave temples and monasteries, were built between the 5th century and 10th century. The 12 Buddhist (caves 1-12), 17 Hindu (caves 13-29) and 5 Jain caves (caves 30-34), built in proximity, demonstrate the religious tolerance prevalent during this period of Indian history.

Other attractions in Aurangabad City

Aurangabad Caves - Aurangabad, too, has a group of caves which are quite beautiful. These Buddhist caves were carved out of the hillside in the 6th or 7th century AD.

Bibi ka Maqbara - Built by Azam Shah in 1678, the Bibi ka Maqbara is a son's loving tribute to his mother, the Queen of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Standing spectacularly on the lawns of the landscaped garden with ponds, fountains and water channels, the white marbled monument rises majestically in an intentional bid to copy and rival the world famous Taj Mahal of Agra. The central tomb, distinguished by elaborate surface ornamentation and intricately perforated marble screens, is framed by four towering minarets.

Panchakki - An engineering feat of the time is the Panchakki, or the water mill built by Malik Ambar in 1695. The water, channeled from a spring on a distant hill was used to power the flour mill and grind grain for the pilgrims.

Darwazas - Most of the monuments in Aurangabad are of the Nizam Shahi, Mughal and Maratha period. There are four main darwazas, or gates leading into the city, which along with nine secondary darwazas formed part of the defense systems of the city.

  Economy

There is ample evidence to believe that Aurangabad was developed as a trading hub four centuries ago. It lies on a major trade route that used to connect north-west India's sea and land ports to the Deccan region. The city has developed industrially since the 1970's and produces motor vehicles and vehicle parts, whiskey, pharmaceuticals, leather, rubber, and plastic products, and fiber-optic cables. The city was a major silk and cotton textile production center. A fine blend of silk with locally grown cotton was developed as Himroo textile. Much of the silk industry has eroded with times. Yet a few industrial units, like Standard Silk Mills , have been successful in keeping that tradition alive. Paithani silk saris are made in small industries nearby and available in the city market. The name of this cloth is derived from Paithan town. Aurangabad is the most important manufacturing center in Marathwada. Pharmaceuticals, steel recycling, auto parts manufacturing, and beverages production (soft drinks and beer in particular) are major industries. The Shendra, Chikalthana and Waluj MIDC Industrial Areas are prominent industrial zones on the outskirts of the city.
