failed IUI
What is IUI?
IUI is the procedure in which husbands’ sperms are washed and inserted in the wife’s uterus near the fallopian tube. IUI is done as a basic treatment to assist reproduction.
The overall success rate of IUI in the world is between 5-15%. There are many reasons to IUI failure, and we will discuss them bellow.
- Logistical reasons: this is one of the most common reasons for IUI failure. Often, I have heard patients say that the semen sample was process in another lab, and it was taken to another hospital for IUI. This may work but this generally damages the sperms. Sperms cannot survive heat and, in the travel, if they get damages, we will not get a successful pregnancy.
- PCOD: If you have PCOD and a failed IUI that is probably because the egg did not rupture and fall in the fallopian tube and thus the sperm could not reach the egg for fertilization
- IUI was not timed: If the follicle did not rupture in time and the IUI was done then we will not get a positive pregnancy.
- Genetic reasons: there is also a possibility that the embryo must be formed inside but its quality is not good hence the IVF failure.
- Thin endometrium: At the time of IUI if the endometrial lining is less than 7mm , implantation will not happen and this will lead to IUI failure.
- Low sperm count and motility: If the sperm count and motility of the sample on the day of IUI is less , we will not achieve a pregnancy in IUI.
